Dear Musicians
The secret to growth as a musician isn't always about having the biggest song, the most followers, or the most expensive equipment.
Sometimes, growth starts with something much simpler: showing love.
Appreciate other artists. Celebrate their achievements. Share their music. Attend their shows. Congratulate them when they release a new song. Give credit where credit is due.
The music industry is not supposed to be a battlefield where every artist sees another artist as competition. There is room for many voices, different styles, and different journeys.
Collaboration Over Competition
Collaboration is one of the most powerful ways artists can grow.
When two artists work together, they don't just create a song. They bring together two audiences, two creative ideas, two networks, and two different experiences. A good collaboration can introduce you to people who may never have discovered your music otherwise.
But collaboration shouldn't always be about asking, "What can this artist do for me?"
Sometimes ask, "What can we create together?"
Support Isn't Just for the Successful
Don't only show love to artists who are already successful. Support upcoming musicians too. Today's unknown artist could become tomorrow's major star. More importantly, genuine relationships built before success often become the strongest relationships after success.
Networking vs. Relationship-Building
There is also a difference between networking and building relationships.
Networking is asking someone for something.
Relationship-building is supporting someone even when you don't immediately need anything from them.
If you constantly promote yourself but never support anyone else, people notice.
If you celebrate everybody else's wins, encourage other creatives, collaborate genuinely, and contribute to the culture, people notice that too.
Respect the Work
You don't have to like every artist's music. You don't have to collaborate with everyone. But you can still respect the work.
Give flowers while people are still here to smell them.
Comment on their work. Share. Recommend. Attend. Collaborate. Introduce people to opportunities. Celebrate wins.
Because music is bigger than one artist.
Your growth may not come from the person you are trying to impress. It may come from the artist you supported when nobody was watching.
Show love. Build relationships. Collaborate. Grow together.
